VIRTUAL REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PROF. YEMI OSINBAJO, SAN, GCON, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA AT THE ENTERPRISE NGR EVENT ON THE 12TH OF OCTOBER, 2021

PROTOCOLS

Today is a special day in Nigeria’s economic journey, and the day may pass quietly as other days, but its significance in the years to come is bound to be huge. The reason is that we are formally establishing the united and powerful voice of the Nigerian business and professional community, EnterpriseNGR. The professional policy and advocacy group with the overarching vision “To be a leading voice and champion for the development and transformation of Nigeria.” and a mission “To advance Nigeria’s transformation as Africa’s premier financial services centre.” This is the private sector taking a lead role in a space traditionally reserved for the public sector.

The promotion of local and foreign investment and advocacy to make the domestic environment more attractive and competitive.  Enterprise agencies in other parts of the world such as TheCityUK, Enterprise Singapore and ABRASCA of Brazil have done this with outstanding success for their business and professional communities and their national economies. There is no doubt that it is a game-changer when the informed Nigerian professional and business community speak with one voice to issues of domestic or international business policy.

I think there might be a need to distinguish slightly between some of the existing enterprise organizations in the world and EnterpriseNGR. So, Enterprise Singapore is government-owned, TheCityUK is private but has a restricted mandate. Its advocacy is primarily to promote the financial and related professional services industry of the United Kingdom.

EnterpriseNGR is more ambitious and has a wider mandate. It will not only promote the financial and related professional services sectors but also champion the development and transformation of the Nigerian economy. And this is as it should be, EnterpriseNGR simply has more ground to cover than these other organizations.

So, on behalf of Mr. President and the Federal Government, I would like to commend the initiators, Aluko and Oyebode, Chapelhill Denham, Coronation Merchant Bank, FBN Quest Merchant Bank, FMDQ Holdings, the Nigerian Exchange Group, the Tengen Family Office, Templars, Central Securities Clearing System and Price Waterhouse Coopers for their farsightedness in establishing EnterpriseNGR, the first in the Africa region.  Well done indeed.

It is our hope and prayer that EnterpriseNGR will achieve its crucial and transformative objectives.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
