WE CAN STOP THE KILLINGS; IT IS A HUMAN PROBLEM WHICH REQUIRES HUMAN SOLUTIONS – OSINBAJO SAYS AT MEETING WITH LAMIDO ADAMAWA
REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PROF. YEMI OSINBAJO, SAN, GCON, THE VICE PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, AT A MEETING WITH THE LAMIDO ADAMAWA AFTER COMMUNAL VIOLENCE IN ADAMAWA STATE ON TUESDAY, 5TH DECEMBER, 2017
PROTOCOLS
We are here to express our very sincere condolences to those who lost their lives in Numan and Mubi recently. Also, the policemen, who in the course of doing their duties, also lost their lives.
All of these killings and deaths do us no good whatsoever and paint us in a very bad light as a nation. I think we can work out a way by which we can prevent all of these by, first of all, taking a second look at this problem.
I was saying to the Honourable Minister on our flight here, that I have taken a look at some of these clashes over the years, from 1996 to this present moment; we can stop these problems, it is possible, but it will take understanding, patience, to look at what the issues are carefully, and then to proffer solutions and see those solutions through.
In doing so, we would have to work with all the community heads, traditional leaders, leaders at federal, state and local government levels. It is possible for us to use Adamawa as a template for the solution to these problems, and this is what I would like to do. If all of us work together, we can resolve this problem and stop this problem once and for all.
Let me assure you again of the commitment of Mr President, in particular, to ensuring there is peace in Adamawa State, and that this is not repeated. There is no reason why we should just have a cycle every once in a while, people kill each other, we keep quiet, and there is another round.
We can stop it; it is possible; it is a human problem which requires a human solution, and we will provide that human solution by working together.
I would like to thank you very much, Your Royal Highness, for taking the time to see me and my delegation before you proceed on a journey, which I’m told you had planned ahead of our sudden visit.
To my dear brother, Governor Bindow, who has I have said before, there is no formality or protocol with him, because I see this as home, and I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome. We will go round as planned, and I am sure that when we are through, we will let you know, your Royal Highness, what we plan to do.
Thank you very much.
