VP’s Remarks On Late Former Governor Of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande

His Excellency, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, in the four years he spent as a Governor, showed what was possible when you have committed and dedicated leadership.

His role was transformative in a way that has become the stuff of legends with programmes such as free education, free healthcare, the transformation of infrastructure in Lagos, the mass housing, etc.

At that time, in the 4-year period between 1979 and 1983, Governor Jakande built more houses than the Federal Government did in the entire country.

He clearly demonstrated what was possible to those who believe that public service can be done honestly, diligently with the welfare of the people being the primary purpose.

For many, we all know that Alhaji Jakande came from the stock of Papa Obafemi Awolowo and what today is referred to as Progressive Politics.  I think that tendency has remained a  strong feature of the Nigerian political landscape and I strongly believe that it is what will propel this country forward.

The passing of this great man just reminds us again of what is possible.

As we mourn him, we are all still excited about what he did and what it means for the future of our country. May his memory remain blessed.
